Winter 2013 Projects

The last half of Advanced Microcontroller Engineering, five weeks, is devoted to an individual project of the student's choosing and design. The only requirements are that it be stand-alone (code in EEPROM), have both an input and output device, and involve hardware beyond that which is on the Dragon12-Plus board used in the class.

Other year's projects for Winter 2014 are here, Winter 2012 are here, for Winter 2011 are here, for Winter 2010 are here, for Spring 2009 are here, Spring 2008 are here, Spring 2007 are here, Spring 2006 are here, Spring 2005 are here, and those for Spring 2004 are here.

Here are the projects in the (arbitrary) order they were presented. Click on any image for an enlarged view.

project Bluetooth Controlled Light Switch by Mark Chernishoff

The Bluetooth module is connected via SCI and after the data register is full an interrupt occurs and handles the data. Depending on the data received certain lights will switch on or off and will display that information on the LCD display. The LCD display also shows the room temperature.

project Bluetooth Wireless Communication of Humidity Sensor Data Between HCS12 Based Development Boards by Chris Knight

My project is a proof-of-concept that interior environmental monitoring devices can be connected simply over a wireless Bluetooth network to a central controller that provides the user interface.

project Using a Pressure Sensor for Coin Detection and Counting by Daniel Shea

The idea for this project was conceived when I considered having a feature in a car's ashtray that would keep a running tally of all the coins dropped into it based on the weight.

project Transistor DC Gain and Leakage Current Monitoring by Eric Pahl

This project is designed to test and display DC current gain (hFE) of BJT transistors. Gain values are displayed on the seven-segment LED display with LED indicators of the transistor type under test provided concurrently.

project Proximity Sensor Using The 68HCS12 Microcontroller and The Parallax PING))) by Michael Ruehle

This project used a proximity sensor to measure the distance from the sensor, convert it to millimeters, and display the distance on the seven-segment display.

project Reflex Trainer Model by Nathan Arp

This is a robot which is meant to generate a reflex exercise routine to improve the reflexes of the participant through cooperative coordination between a motor system and a sensor system.

project MIDI to Control Voltage Converter For Control of Analog Music Synthesizers by Curtis Losey

The device receives MIDI data, processes it according to programmed constraints, and transmits monophonic note values and controller change (CC) value to external DACs.

project Audio Dynamic Range Compressor Using a VCA and a Microcontroller Controlled Gain Control Voltage by Matt Distad

This project uses a 68HCS12 microcontroller and a THAT2180 voltage controlled amplifier to implement an audio-band dynamic range compressor.

project Time Lapse Photography System by Joseph Jankowski

The project provides the ability to move a DSLR camera along a rail in small increments and trigger the shutter at precise intervals. These photographs can then be edited into a short video sequence compressing time to make slow moving events appear to proceed at a rapid pace.
